The Wisdom of Worship
December 18, 2016
Pastor David Cassidy
Matthew 1:18 – 2:2 and 2:11–12
WORSHIP is the first response of the whole universe to the presence of Jesus Christ. Angels singing, shepherds on the move, wisemen journeying over weeks and months to come to this one moment…and when they saw him, they fell down and worshiped him, opening their gifts before him.
When Mary gave birth to her son, she laid him in a manger…which was a food trough. And from the very first seconds of his sojourn among us, Jesus gives himself as heavenly food. He is our feast. He is the one who comes to offer himself to save us. And with angels and shepherds and wisemen, we come and we worship him. What is the wisdom of worship? It’s seen in three phrases that describe these wisemen: we’ve seen, we’ve come, and we bow down.
They saw the star, and then they saw him, and they became worshipers. You know what it says at the end of text? It says they went home a different way. That’s what happens to everybody who meets Jesus. You’ll go home a different way.
Have you seen him? If you have, come and worship. Worship Christ, the newborn King.
