1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 11-14

There is no every gift Christian. There is no one in this room who has everything they need without the other people in this room.

There is no every Christian gift. “Every person has to have THIS gift. If you really have the Spirit, then you have THIS.” No, there’s diversity.

That diversity is the unity of this one thing: the Holy Spirit himself. He is at work in you. He is uniting us and building us together, and where that is supremely manifested is when we gather around this table – with all of our diversity, all of our jacked up-ness, all of the stuff that used to divide us – and we come to the table because there’s one Lord, one faith, one baptism. The reason we can do that is because 2000 years ago the Holy Spirit came into the womb of the virgin Mary and Jesus was conceived. And then he lived by the Spirit, and offered himself up in the Spirit, and then the Spirit raised him up from the dead. And he did all of that so that the guilt of our sins could be taken away and the reality of a new humanity could begin to emerge n the world that showed the unity and diversity of who God himself is.

If you have the Holy Spirit, you not only need the church, you are the church.
