POWER & PRESENCE: Living Life in the Spirit
The Purpose of Pentecost

Acts 1:4-5; 2:1-8,12
The Feast of Pentecost was a feast of harvest; it meant the harvest was beginning. What had been planted, nurtured, and cared for was about to be brought in.
It was also a celebration of God, coming down in fire on Mt. Sinai, and giving his law to his people, writing his word on tablets of stone. On that day, when God came down in fire, the people trembled. As you know, they went into idolatry. They made a golden calf and began to worship it instead of God. And on that day, 3000 people died.
How many people were converted on the day of Pentecost? When God poured out his spirit and the fire came down again, how many? 3000. Because grace and mercy are always greater than the law.
