John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7,13-14; 20:19-22
Jesus, raised from the dead, gathered his disciples around him and he did something very curious. He breathed on them, and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22)
Jesus breathed on his disciples because they were the start of a new creation.
And what happened over the next 50 days between that moment and Pentecost is that breath of Jesus became a mighty rushing wind. And from the throne of his Father, that mighty rushing wind filled the whole house where all the disciples were gathered, about 120 of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. With the breath, with the wind, the church came alive. The new creation was expanding its boundaries and the flame was spreading through Jerusalem. Tongues of fire rested on them and the flame began to spread into the Samaritans and into the Gentiles.
And the fire has been spreading ever since and taking over nations. Because the wind, the breath of Almighty God is bringing the dead to life. He’s the LORD and the GIVER OF LIFE.
