ABOUT Wonder Week

One of our favorite weeks of the year! Wonder Week is an opportunity for kids to spend a week at Christ Community making friends, engaging in worship, learning new skills, and finding out how God impacts every area of our lives.

Who can come?
Children entering Kindergarten through 5th grade in the fall of 2018 are welcome to join us. (Rising Kindergarten students participate in a more contained program on the preschool hallway.) Neighbors, friends, and grandchildren are welcome!

What do the kids do all day?
Each child is placed in two workshops that they attend daily throughout the week. In addition, we have worship through music, snacks, free play time, and crafts. See the 2018 workshops below!

What is the closing celebration?
Join us on Friday, June 22 (from 7:00 to 8:30 pm) for the closing celebration of Wonder Week. This is your chance to see performances by Wonder Week’s dancers, actors, and film participants, as well as view displays from other workshops. The evening includes a water slide and bounce house, photo booth, and some outdoor games. Everyone is welcome – all ages, Wonder Week participants and non-participants, siblings, parents, family, friends, and neighbors!

KINDERGARTEN EXPLORERS

Rising Kindergarteners will be a part of our fun WONDER WEEK EXPLORERS program, enjoying rotating activities including science, crafts, music, Bible storytelling, games, fun food preparation, and play-time!

1st – 5th GRADE WORKSHOPS

Rising 1st through 5th graders will be placed in TWO WORKSHOPS that they attend daily throughout the week. In addition, we have worship through music, snacks, free play time, and crafts.

ADVENTURES IN ART: Do you love to draw, paint, color, doodle, and make things? God is the master artist so we will be inspired by The Creator!

ART YOU CAN EAT: From decorating cupcakes to making snacks to creating food crafts, we’ll make something different each day. A cupcake that looks like a pig? An apple that looks like an alien? Snacks that look like bugs? Come discover all the fun treats we can eat!

BODY BREAKDOWN: What happens to your food after you eat? What if you had NO BONES?!? Come create, experiment, and play your way through the complex system that is YOU.

CHEF (YOU): We’ll tie on an apron and don our chef hats as we learn a new secret each day to make food creations go from “meh” to “WOW”.

CHOIR KIDS: La, la, la…If you love to sing, this is the right place! We’ll use our voices to sing praises to God and learn about reading music, too.

DISCOVERY LAB: Have you ever wondered why something happens or how something works?  If you’re curious about the world around you, Discovery Lab is for you. Come explore science and chemistry through fascinating experiments, and find out how science reveals the character of God. Take Chances! Make mistakes! Get messy!  And don’t forget your goggles! This is going to be fun!

FILMMAKING BASICS: From concept to execution – we’ll go over the basics of turning an idea into a short film. We will cover the basics of composition, writing, lighting, directing, acting…even some special effects.

GOOEY GAMES: Sticky, Splashy and Yucky! These games are fun, funny, and guaranteed to be a mess! We will be messy but HAPPY!

LEGO ADVENTURE: Love Legos?! This is the workshop for you! We’ll play games, tackle Lego challenges, and even build a small creation for you to take home at the end of the week. Come join the fun!

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE: Outdoor adventures are fun! You can learn to tie knots, set up a tent, and go hiking.  Have you ever cooked outdoors? Backpacked? If you like to learn by doing, then this is just the workshop for you!

PICTURE THIS: Are you the king of the silly selfies? Do you want to capture some great pics of your summer vacation? This workshop will have you snapping pictures like a pro.

TIME TO DANCE: Your body is amazing! Use it to tell stories, express your feelings, and have lots of fun. All experience levels – beginner to advanced.

Wonder Week Volunteers

The Wonder Week model is highly relational. As a result, we limit the number of participants based on the number of volunteers. The more volunteers we have, the more children we can impact!

What kinds of volunteer positions are available?
It takes all kinds of volunteers to run Wonder Week. From workshop leaders to snack prep, all kinds of help is welcome. Our biggest needs at this point include workshop leaders, base group leaders (responsible for leading a small group of children through their schedule for the day-no prep, highly relational), and preschool/nursery volunteers.

Can students volunteer?
Yes! Rising 6th and 7th graders may volunteer if a parent is on campus. They may volunteer with their parent or as part of a special service group designed just for their age group. Rising 8th, 9th, and 10th graders may serve in The Hub (games, snacks, and crafts) or as base group assistant leaders. Rising 11th and 12th graders can serve in any capacity (including leading a workshop) with the consent of the director.

Do you offer nursery / preschool childcare for adult volunteers?
We have a nursery and preschool program for children of volunteers. There is no charge for participation in nursery and preschool.

To volunteer, contact Becky Clark with any questions.
