The April 21 SAM lunch event features a one-man show, paying tribute to one of America’s greatest songwriters.

“Irving Berlin: An American Creation” is written and performed by Shawn Knight.

This bring-your-own lunch event is noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 in the Event Center at Christ Community Church. Please signup by emailing [email protected] or signing up during the Senior Adult Sunday School hour in the second floor C Wing hallway.

Knight explains that Irving Berlin’s earliest memory was standing outside his Russian home watching it burn down, torched by enemies of the Jews. His family embraced a grueling journey to America, where he grew to become the most successful songwriter of the 20th century, publishing over 1,000 songs. Shawn Knight crafts his research into the life and music of Irving Berlin into a one-man show, bringing Irving Berlin to life to discuss his failures and his many successes. Along the way, Berlin will share the stories behind “God Bless America,” “White Christmas” and many of his other greatest creations.

Knight is a professional equity actor who lives in Nashville. As a performer, he has been seen on the stage at the Tennessee Shakespeare Company, Tennessee Repertory Company, the Nashville Children’s Theater, the Kentucky Repertory Theatre, the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, and dozens of other venues. He has also performed one-man shows about George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
